The opening concert of the Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra's 13th season will feature music of Gershwin, Grundman, DeVour and a special tribute to the late Charlie Perkins.
Conductor Robin DeVour is an avid composer and founder of the Orchestra. His "Sea Shanty Suite" was composed in 2003 expressly for the OCCO and is dedicated to the composer's wife, Helen, "without whose collaboration it would never have been written". The work consists of six movements of contrasting tempi including hauling shanties (work songs sung by the sailors as they hoisted sails) and slower American river shanties sung when raising the anchor.
Charlie Perkins was a prolific composer, professional trumpet player and a good friend to many of us. The Orchestra has performed many of his compositions over the past 13 seasons including Mouth of the Siltcoos, North Fork, Box Car and A Bassoon & Oboe Affair which are on this concert's program. Charlie passed away this July at the age of 88.
